Switch on Active Data Guard

Active Data Guard is introduced in Oracle 11gr1. Previously, a physical database must be mounted while performing media recovery, it stops users from querying  information on standby database in the same time. Active Data Guard addresses this issue and it acts as a database running in read only mode while performing media recovery.

Switching a physical standby to an Active Data Guard is a simple operation.

By Sqlplus

Turn off media recovery process

SQL> recover managed standby database cancel;

open the standby database in read only mode

SQL> alter database open;
SQL> select open_mode from v$database;

Activate media recovery while physical standby is in read-only mode.

SQL> recover managed standby database using current logfile disconnect;

Verify standby database status

SQL> select OPEN_MODE, DATABASE_ROLE from v$database;

OPEN_MODE               DATABASE_ROLE
